lil’ Stockholm in Nueva Andalucia, Costa del Sol
We know VERY little even now, beyond rumor, of what transpired … it just happend. And is happening right here in Nueva Andalucia, in this quiet, affluent neighborhood of a melting pot of culture, color and businesses. Attracted here by the beautiful climate, business opportunities, and the quality of life in the Costa del Sol, the Swedes have invaded and are invading Marbella and the Costa del Sol !
Swedish businesses are popping up every month : self-employed, medical practitioners, real estate companies, law firms, restaurants, and stores stocked with native products, … … … yes, the Swedes have landed and are here to stay. These invadors not only LOVE the Spanish lifestyle, they also, immediately, adopt the Spanish working habits on arrival, like, a typical working day here starts at 10am, with lunch and a siesta between 2 and 5 pm (a sensible way of managing afternoon heat), then follows late dinners, and the laidback Mediterranean attitude. + Add the aperitives. + sea air that is proven to encourage respiratory health and makes people happier and more relaxed — like the happy Spaniards.
Hablas Espanol?
You do not even need to know Spanish, here. Some folks dont even bother to learn Spanish prefering to speak Russian, or French, or Farsi, and also because there are so many English-speaking expatriates around. Besides, Spanish people here speak English. Hablas Espanol? They do, the invadors. They go to school and learn !
Another scope : the Swedes are among the TOP foreign property owners in Nueva Andaluica and other areas of Costa del Sol — it is amazing for a country with a populaton of about ten million. Before, only the older generation coud afford moving out here to live and work and chill out. But that has changed. The young are the biggest invadors today.
But WHY are the younger Swedes flocking here by thousands ? Good question :
- Online and telemarketing companies that can be managed by phone
- the easy flight connections
- the sun, the sun, the sun
- the Spanish way of life : easy and full of siestas and good wine
- opportunities, opportunities, opportunies
- and food, of course. Fresh and delicious
But there are many OTHER reasons, for example : “Living in Spain spurs my creativity. I don’t work in an office; I prefer to be outside – at a café or a beach bar – stimulated by my surroundings and the people I see.” — Swedish author Birgitta Bergin on her latest novel En Oemotståndlig Affär (An Irresistable Affair)
The Swedes have invaded and are melting into the international Marbella scene. See other examples :
John Scott’s : The Swedish Irish Bar :
Swedish and Irish? Yes. Curious. But a successful marriage of the two, i hear. The Swedish Irish Bar offers good quality beers from Swedish micro-brewries as well as the usual local stuff. Did you know?
Scandi Supermarket :
Scandi stocks most of the Swedish food that you would need, home away from home. So you can enjoy that and other delights from around the world in just a few minutes’ walk.
Schools :
Ever head of Svenska Skolan? Is a small Swedish preschool and primary school in Marbella, for example. There are many international schools here. You decide.
Women stuff : Marbella branch of the Swedish Women’s Educational Association – ‘SWEA.’
